Design and Technology at Flixton Primary School brings learning to life by providing a motivating and meaningful context for using English, maths, science, art and computing.
DT involves three important elements – learning about the designed and made world and how things work, and learning to design and make functional products for particular purposes and users and learning life skills.
Life skills are a fundamental element of our DT curriculum and include teaching the skills needed for cooking, baking, gardening and sewing, as well as providing children with the opportunity to work collaboratively for a purpose outside of the classroom.
This year the whole school took part in a sponsored willow weaving to make a willow arch that will be available for everyone to use. It was a fantastic project that saw children working together from all over the school to achieve a brilliant tunnel. Below are a few photographs showing the children collaborating and the tunnel as it is now.
The children are using various construction materials. They are beginning to construct, stacking blocks vertically, stacking blocks vertically and horizontally, making enclosures and creating spaces. They join construction pieces together to build and balance and realise that tools can be used for a purpose.
The children understand that different media can be combined to create new effects. They manipulate materials to achieve a planned effect. They construct with a purpose in mind, using a variety of
resources. Children use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately. They select appropriate resources and adapt work where necessary, Selecting tools and techniques needed to shape, assemble and join materials they are using. They safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
Designing functional products, selecting from a range of materials and components, evaluating their ideas and using mechanisms.
Design appealing products for themselves and other users based on design criteria, select from and use a range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks, evaluate their ideas and products against design criteria.
Analysing, gaining understanding of materials, peer evaluating, improving, instructing... Lots happening in DT in Y3 as they lead up to making their packaging!
They've researched, they've analysed, they've gained LOTS of technical knowledge... Now Y4 are ready to complete their specification and get-to designing and making bridges.
Analysing, investigating and making prototypes... So far, Year 5 have designing puppets!
Let there be...light!
Follow Year 6's dazzling learning journey. The children have proven they're full of bright ideas, with thoughtful analysis and sparks of creativity!
At Flixton Primary school we are incredibly lucky to be able to share the talents of Mrs Tatham and Mr Moulton, our cooking and outdoor specialists. The children love spending time with both adults and they are given the opportunity to develop important life skills including learning to work independently, measuring risks and taking responsibility. The children support each other during these experiences and they see it as a valuable addition to their learning experience.
