The Early Years Foundation Stage
The Early Years Foundation Stage begins from a very early age. Children will have already learnt a great deal by the time they are three years old, particularly from their families, and will have varied interests and skills.
Children aged three, four and five are constantly encountering new experiences and seeking to understand them in order to extend their skills, develop their confidence and build on what they already know. They learn in many different ways.
Children deepen their understanding by playing, talking, observing, planning, questioning, experimenting, testing, repeating, reflecting and responding to adults and to each other.
Well-planned play is a key way in which children learn with enjoyment and challenge during the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Personal, Social and Emotional development
Supporting the children as they are admitted to the Nursery and Reception years. We provide opportunities for each child to become a valued member of the school and the community so that strong self-image and self-esteem are promoted.
By developing an enthusiasm for knowledge and learning and a confidence in their ability to be successful learners. Children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and celebrate their achievements.
Playing and Exploring
By providing opportunities that enable them to learn how to co-operate and work harmoniously alongside and with each other and to listen to each other, they investigate and experience things by ‘having a go’.
Creating and Thinking Critically
By developing the capacity to concentrate on their own play or on group task. Children develop their own ideas and start to make links between ideas, developing strategies for doing things
Communication and Language
By providing opportunities for all children to talk and communicate in a widening range of situations, to respond to adults and to each other, to practise and extend the range of vocabulary and communication skills they use and to listen carefully.
Reading and Writing
By providing opportunities for all children to explore, enjoy, learn about and use words and text in a broad range of contexts and to experience a rich variety of books.
By providing opportunities for all children to develop their understanding of numbers, measurement, pattern, shape and space providing a broad range of contexts in which they can explore, enjoy, learn, practise and talk about them.
Understanding the World
By providing opportunities for all children to solve problems, make decisions, experiment, predict, plan and question in a variety of contexts, and to explore and find out about their environment and people and places that have significance in their lives.
By providing opportunities for all children to develop and practise their fine and gross motor skills and to increase their understanding of how their bodies work and what they need to do to be healthy and safe.
By providing opportunities for all children to explore and share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of art, design and technology, music, movement, dance and imaginative role play activities.
The last year of the Early Years Foundation Stage is the Reception year when children are admitted to the Reception classes in the Infant School. The Early Years Foundation Stage prepares children for learning in Key Stage 1 and is consistent with the National Curriculum.
Here are some of our continuous provision areas in the Nursery which are linked to the children's learning. The children have the opportunity to access both indoor and outdoor provision daily.
In Reception, the children have to opportunity to build on their skills learnt in the nursery through well planned play opportunities, both inside and outside.
